Personality & Traits

General Overview Brenan is cocky and arrogant at first glance, and then he's cocky and arrogant on the second and third glance as well. He's fiercely loyal to his crew and his captain, and he's a damn fine officer. The problem is, he's also well aware of that. Brenan is sarcastic and smug, but he can also be charming and romantic when the desire arises.

What most people don't see in Brenan is the frustration and pressure he's constantly under from his father to be a bigger, better, higher ranking officer. This leaves him exceptionally stessed, and is deep down the root of his bravado. He's also well aware of this, but he's accepted it as a coping mechanism.

Personal History Brenan was born and raised in Little Foot, Kansas in the heartland of the United States. From an early age, he was unhappy with his life and how it was shaping up. The son of two Starfleet officers, his drive toward the stars was forced from day one. In honesty, that was fine with Brenan.

Brenan started looking for civilian spacing jobs, freighters, commuters, whatever he could find. He was happily coming home to tell his parents that he'd landed a job at an inter-galactic freight company when his father met him at the door, with bags already packed and a driver waiting, to inform him that he'd been enrolled in Starfleet Academy and was to leave immediately.

Brenan balked and argued, never having wanted to pursue the military life that his parents had, but he was given no option in the matter. Frustrated, but wanting to please his parents, Brenan reluctantly went into the academy.

Brenan was honestly surprised at how quickly he fell into step with Academy life. The camaraderie suited him well, as did the excitement of training. Brenan fell in quickly with the Security classes and before long declared that as his focus (with a sub-focus in command at his father's insistence).

Brenan excelled at Security, but the pressure from his parents - particularly his father - was crushing. He'd ace a class, but he still wasn't on the honor roll. He'd score high marks, but another kid scored higher. If he wasn't the best, he wasn't good enough.

Brenan suffered in his third year because of this, and his grades fell as he felt the first waves of depression over come him. He didn't want to be there anyway, and on top of that all that he was doing was far from good enough to satisfy his parents. His father was sending hateful mail daily, and his mother didn't do much more than say how sorry he was that he couldn't hack it.

One of his teachers told him to just start telling himself and everyone who challenged him that he was the best and then just be the best. It seemed stupid, but Brenan tried it. His new found cocky attitude wasn't his favorite attribute to his teachers, but the more he kept insisting that he was the best - especially to himself - and rushing forward and just simply doing things the better and better he got.

In his final year at the academy, he made his way to the honor roll and was scoring top marks in all of his classes. He graduated with distinction, in spite of his previous years performance. His father didn't seem to notice.

Brenan worked his way from ship to ship, earning his promotions from Ensign to Lt. JG, to full Lieutenant, and finally Lt. Commander aboard the USS Arc Fall.

Brenan put in for a Executive Officer's spot and was reassigned to the academy to teach until one opened up for him. A week into his teaching stint - after a particularly rough argument with his father about how he was throwing his career away teaching - Brenan received word that his parents had died in an aircar wreck the night before.

Brenan was assigned to the USS Oasis as XO, but requested to remain at the academy until he'd figured out what to do. He'd come this far because of their pushing and without it... he truly had no idea what he wanted to do.

Brenan stayed on at the Academy for quite some time afterward, not really sure if he wanted to quit and pursue his own interests, or move on with his career. Surprisingly enough, his brash and cocky nature made him a favorite among many of the students.

After a while, the urge to take to the stars again over took him, and he requested another ship assignment. Much to his surprise, it was for an XO position aboard the USS Langport.
