Counselors, or therapists as some choose to be called, are scientists who study behavior and mental functions. They are not medical doctors, though they do work hand in hand with sickbay to ensure the well being of not only the crew, but anyone who steps aboard the starship. They are the peacemakers and glib talkers who help broker peace deals, the voice of the ship civilians, the face of the ship for media relations, the morality rule, the diplomat, the rock in a crisis: all these things and more.

Notes

When creating a counselor, it is important to understand that you are a psychologist not a psychiatrist. A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor who prescribes medicine as well as can perform invasive procedures. Psychology is an applied science of the mind that guides the patient to help themselves using various therapies both physical and mental, meditations, learning supplements and one on one consultations.

Psychologists do often refer patients to medical doctors for medication, but only usually after cognitive therapies alone fail to suffice.
